What to know before you begin.
No. Folio decides how to help within the conversation: a direct answer, a search, a clarification question, or a detailed report. You can ask about your project or a document without starting a full research workflow.
Enable the skills you want available on the Skills page. The agent sees their names and descriptions, then loads relevant instructions on demand. Disabled skills are unavailable. Mention an enabled skill with @ to express a preference; you do not need to select skills before each question.
Yes. Writing opens a live report preview beside the conversation. Completed reports support tables, charts, diagrams, code blocks and formulas. Export to PDF or Word with rendered figures, or keep the Markdown source. Check the format guide for supported syntax.
Folio searches the web, opens source pages, and finds evidence. It can also list, find, search and read the files, background notes and reports you select from your knowledge library. Tools are built in: you do not need a separate tool setup page. Library queries stay within your selected context and never execute arbitrary server commands.
Yes. Upload PDF, DOCX or text documents, add background notes, and organize them in projects. For each question, choose all materials or selected materials, projects and reports as context. You can also import, edit or create research skills, including generating an editable draft from a one-sentence description.
Folio is a local-first research workspace prototype. It brings questions, source-linked reports, and report versions together so you can revisit both the answer and the thinking behind it.
Yes. Open the example report to explore the reading experience without a provider connection. Generating live research requires model and web search provider credentials configured on the server.
Research is stored in a server-side SQLite database, in this installation's data directory by default, not in browser storage. An HttpOnly browser cookie identifies and scopes access to your workspace. Clearing that cookie loses access from this browser; it does not delete the stored research or database files. Live research sends requests to the configured model and web search providers, so it is not fully offline.
Yes. Treat a generated report as a starting point, not a final authority. Open its sources, check dates and context, and confirm important claims before using them to make a decision.
